Welcome Letter from the new director, Mr. Cerna!

Hello to the Cal High Instrumental Music community!

My name is Javier Cerna, and I am honored to be the new Instrumental Music Director at California High School. The kindness extended to me by the students, parents and staff that I've met in my first few days here on campus has me feeling very much at home already. My hope as the new director is to continue the traditions of excellence and community-building that has led to the success of the Cal High Instrumental Music program as we strive for even more growth and future success!

I previously served as the director of the Saint Francis High School Instrumental Music program in the Silicon Valley for six years; prior to that I taught at Bernal Intermediate School, Orange County School of the Arts, and Villa Park High School in Southern California. In the years that I have been an educator I have come to believe that a comprehensive music education will help move students toward growth and success in all areas of life, and that all students can be successful in the arts regardless of skill level. Together with the administrators here at California High School, we are committed to furthering students’ opportunities in the performing arts and ensuring all students can find a welcoming and inclusive home with the Cal High Instrumental Music program.

No high school music program can move forward without the support of the community. I am tremendously excited to meet the families here at Cal High, and I hope you will continue to cheer on all of our student musicians as we begin the work of bringing them back onto our campus! Please know that my door is always open to you, and I can’t wait to meet you all!

Musically yours,

Javier Cerna
